Werribee is often associated with the Western Treatment Plant and for the past 10 years also for being the repository of the refuse from an increasing number of metropolitan councils. The service is provided to other regions to alleviate their need to manage their own refuse and is a source of controversy for some locals who feel the western suburbs are becoming the dumping ground for all of Melbourne.

MOUNTAIN MOVES seeks to celebrate the service Wyndham offers the rest of Melbourne in its willingness to accept the detritus of consumption - and make art either from it or about it. The site is a moving mountain of refuse, managed with the latest technology involving capturing methane gas from the decomposing garbage as well as collection of waste water to avoiding contamination of the ground water.

Artists Karen Casey and Steven Rhall will investigate the Wyndham City Council Refuse Disposal Facility over a five month period to produce a joint exhibition for the Wyndham Art Gallery.

Wyndham Art Gallery is open:
Weekdays 9am – 5pm
